Word has come to us that blues singer Piney Brown passed away on Thursday, February 5th, 2009 after a lengthy illness. A long-time Dayton, Ohio resident, Brown was born in Birmingham, Alabama in 1922 and began performing as a young teenager, singing with his sisters as the Blue Jay Singers, a gospel group.

Although relatively obscure, even by blues music standards, Brown is remembered as a dynamic performer and talented singer capable of belting out tunes in a variety of styles, from blues and soul to jazz, and even country and western. Through the years, Brown recorded singles for a number of labels, including Apollo Records, King Records, Duke, and Sound Stage 7. Although Brown never scored a major hit himself, he was a skilled songwriter who penned hits for artists like James Brown, Roscoe Gordon, and Little Milton, among others.

Piney Brown toured steadily throughout his lengthy career, which stretched from the 1940s until the current decade, often performing alongside legendary artists like Chuck Berry and Bo Diddley. In 2002, Pittsburgh R&B fan Fred Bohn brought Brown together with Jeff Ingersoll of Bonedaddy Records. The label subsequently released Brown's final two albums, 2006's One Of These Days being the blues artist's last effort, a fine collection of blues, funk, and soul.

Brown will be remembered by his fans as a hard-working showman. In a 2006 interview with the Pittsburgh City Paper's Justin Hopper, Brown said "I’m gonna play as many gigs as I can get. Me and my band, we wanna work, we don’t wanna just sit around – ain’t no distance too far for us to go."
